HOW TO MIX HOUSEPLANTS AND EVERGREENS IN YOUR HOLIDAY DECOR

HOW-TO~1.JPG

It might seem like wintery Christmas decorations and leafy green houseplants are an odd mix, but nothing could be further from the truth! Using houseplants can add interest and contrast to holiday decorating with their varying shades of green and unique leaf shapes. Houseplants can make a striking feature in a festive centerpiece, and pretty ornaments can add a touch of sparkle to a potted plant. You can also mix houseplants with a variety of fresh evergreen boughs for unique and personal festive decor. Here are a few creative ways to style your Indianapolis houseplants and evergreen holiday decor.

FRESH EVERGREEN GARLAND

Fresh evergreen garland looks beautiful wound around and between potted houseplants on a shelf or table. These fragrant decorations make everything look a little more wild and natural. Wrap twinkle lights around the garland, and you’ll see your houseplants from a whole new perspective with the pretty lights surrounding them.

Garland also looks lovely wrapped around the edge of a table full of plants. Hang a few shiny ornaments from the garland and add some twinkle lights for a gorgeous holiday display.

Got some air plants? If you’re using fresh evergreen garland, tuck in some air plants here and there. You can even hang them from the garland with fishing line, so they look like they’re just floating in the air around the greens. Their colors and shapes beautifully complement the evergreens for winter with their needle-like tips.

FRESH EVERGREEN WREATHS

Evergreen wreaths can be used in festive decor in a variety of ways. Lay them flat on a table and, instead of candles, set a potted houseplant in the center. Add some ornaments around the base of the pot, or tie a pretty ribbon around it.

If you’ve got a collection of miniature succulents or cacti in adorable tiny pots, you can use them to decorate a wreath! Use wire to create tiny pot holders, spaced out evenly along the sides.

DECORATE YOUR HOUSEPLANTS

Adding something as simple as a holiday bow or some Christmas garland to a potted plant gives it a festive feel. You can also hang a few small Christmas ornaments around the edge of a plant pot for a little extra sparkle.

Setting a few sparkly ornaments around the base of your plant pot is an eye-catching way to add some glitz and glamour. If your plant is fairly strong, you could even hang some Christmas ornaments from it. Otherwise, try mounting a few ornaments on sticks or wires, and stand them up in the pot with your plant.

If you’re not so sure about decorating your actual plants, you could get them festive decorative pots for the season. With smaller plants, you can pop them into Christmas-y mugs for the holiday season. Medium or large plant pots can also be wrapped in burlap and ribbon for a rustic holiday look.

Last but not least, simply adding a string of twinkle lights makes almost any house plant look instantly Christmas-y—and who doesn’t love twinkle lights!
