Plant More Native Species

We always encourage planting species native to Indiana. There are so many noticeable benefits! For starters, native plants have adapted to live here in the wild, so they're incredibly low-maintenance and don't need much water, chemical fertilizers, or general upkeep. They're also the most attractive plants for bees and butterflies—local wildlife prefer plants that remind them of home!

They’re great for the environment, and they’re gorgeous too! Here are a few of Indiana’s most vibrant native plants you can easily grow in your garden:

  • Columbine

  • Switchgrass

  • Aster

  • Big Bluestem

  • Echinacea

  • Little Bluestem

  • Joe Pye Weed

  • Creeping Phlox

  • Tall Coreopsis

  • False Sunflower

  • Great Blue Lobelia

  • Bergamot

  • Strawberries

  • Blue Flag Iris

  • Cardinal Flower

  • Celandine Poppy

Discover Peculiar New Edible Plants

Growing your own fruits and vegetables is a super effective way to improve your overall health and wellness, so it's certainly worth incorporating into your New Year's resolutions! Whether you're a newbie or a seasoned gardener, there are so many fascinating varieties of vegetables to discover. Take tomatoes, for example; there are thousands of heirloom varieties in every color of the rainbow, plus plenty more hybrid varieties getting released every year.

Make a point of planting something interesting and peculiar that you've never grown before! Curiosity alone is a great motivator to get an extra serving of veggies on your plate! Plus, planting different veggies every year helps to prevent the recurrence of pathogens like verticillium wilt. Try some of these veggie varieties in your garden this year:

  • Purple Cauliflower

  • Purple Carrots

  • Kohlrabi

  • Sorrel

  • Romanesco

  • Amaranth

  • Kalettes

  • Chicory

  • Cucamelons

  • Smurf Tomatoes

Be Pollinator-Friendly

As we mentioned before, native plants are the most popular plants among local wildlife, so that's your first step toward making your garden pollinator-friendly! To help further support pollinator populations—which unfortunately are declining—put these pollinator-friendly tips into practice:

  • Avoid using chemical pesticides and use natural alternatives like insecticidal soap, neem oil, and diatomaceous earth

  • Create wildlife habitats like bee hotels and birdhouses

  • Plant red, tubular flowers to attract hummingbirds

Create Tranquility

Transform your garden into a serene sanctuary where you can relax and unwind. Having a lounge space outdoors is so incredible for your health, both physically and mentally. Water features like fountains, ponds, and birdbaths are a fantastic way to create ambiance and a sense of calm in the landscape, and they help support our local wildlife! Be sure to plant some native ornamental grasses—you'll love watching them sway in the breeze. It's so meditative!

Go Bigger and Brighter

What's the ultimate garden color trend for 2022? As many colors as possible—we aren't about the minimalist aesthetic anymore! This year, we want to embrace vivacity and vibrancy. Instead of toiling away in the lawn, keeping it perfectly manicured and plain, why not use some of that space to plant more wildflowers? It's better for the environment, more beautiful, and adds so much personality and spirit to your space!

If you haven't tried planting larger landscape plants like trees or shrubs, find some fabulous flowering varieties with color-changing leaves for visual interest from spring through fall. They'll make your space more beautiful and inviting, and they'll increase your property value too!

Happy New Year from all of us at Dammann's Garden Co.! If you need any seeds, supplies, or general guidance to help make your garden resolutions a reality, visit us at the garden center, and we'll be happy to help.
